The Benefits of Wallcoverings

Wallcoverings have a rich and storied past as a popular décor item. But they are not ancient history – there are many modern benefits to using wallcoverings in your home.

  1. The sheer number of design choices

benefits of wallcoverings 1Wallcovering design can quite literally be anything: stripes, flowers, Victorian style murals, abstract shapes – the list is endless. The designs are limited only by the artist’s imagination. Many of my hand painted custom wallcoverings are used as the room’s focal point. I think of it like a painting or statement wall décor – it is something that reflects your unique style and flair, not just another colour on the Benjamin Moore colour wheel.

Wallcovering can change the visual appearance of any room in many ways: they can be used as an accent wall in the bedroom or living room, or as complete wallcoverings in foyers, powder rooms, dining rooms and libraries. Wallcoverings can act both as a background to wall art and as art on its own, depending on the overall design desired.

But wallcoverings are not limited only by colour or pattern – they can be textured and made from different materials like silk, linen, bamboo, velvet… whether it is actually textured or simply provides the illusion of texture, it adds an element of interest and personality to the room.

Depending on the design chosen it could become a great conversation topic in your dining or living room during gatherings with family or friends.

Under normal usage conditions, wallcoverings last five times longer than paint. When installed correctly, wallcoverings can retain their original beauty and performance characteristics for 15-25 years or more; a painted surface must be cleaned more frequently to maintain its appearance, and generally requires repainting approximately every three years. Most wallpaper adhesive contain anti-fungicidal agent to prevent mould growth.

All my wallpapers are available with applied water based, protective finish. Although it is optional, I would recommend it for high traffic areas, otherwise it is not necessary.

  1. It is cost effective

Few people would debate the aesthetic excellence of wallcoverings over paint, but some might be surprised to learn that, over time, wallcoverings are also a wise economical choice.

Despite the seemingly higher upfront costs of wallpaper compared to paint, wallpaper is actually much more economical. Because of its durability, there is no additional time or cost to keep wallpaper looking as gorgeous as the day it was applied. Once it is on the wall, it’s there to stay! As an added benefit, wallcoverings adhere easily and smoothly to walls, hiding many surface imperfections.

Wallcovering prices vary depending on the design, style and brand you opt for. Custom hand painted benefits of wallcovering 4wallcoverings are considered a work of art, therefore prices are understandably higher.

Wallpaper can be used to create an expensive designer look in any space, which simply can’t be said about paint.

For these reasons (and more, of course) I absolutely love using wallpaper in my home and my client’s homes.

I love designing and hand painting wallpaper that can not only function as fine art, but is also immensely practical.
